There seems to be media attention showered over every new launch.
All day, every day- you get ads for the latest and greatest in tech.
Do we need it really?
Price — The simplest reason. The newest console(+ accessories) and games over years would run in thousands of dollars.. 1 generation older- would probably be in hundreds. With the same amount of money you can get a PS5 in + few games, you can fully fund a PS4 + Entire collection of top games released so far.
Game prices tend to go down drastically a year/or two post launch. The quality remains the same though.
Quality — The quality of a game is defined by how rich the gameplay is, not how shiny the graphics are. Best graphic quality games end up being the biggest disappointments — eg. Fallout 76 and WWE 2K20 .
Newest console lacks games. Although it is announced with much fanfare, the number of titles are drastically limited during first 1 year as companies adjust to newest software and hardware specifications.
Microtransactions — Older games were defined with a pay once use forever model. Now with Fortnite changing the landscape, all newer games have microtransactions.
You have pay for a helmet,clothes, guns, accessories or any other random item they can think off.
Older games have zero to minimum microtranscations.
Time to adapt new technology — 5G will not be in our phones tomorrow. Although there’s infrastructure, our phones cannot support it.
Although newer consoles support Raytracing, 4K, Dolby surround and new technologies; it will take developers years to fully analyze and deliver according to the capabilities of the newest console.
Storage — With a lesser price you can get much more storage now that a AAA title consumes upwards of 100GB’s a game. Going from 1TB PS5 to 2 TB PS5 would be much more expensive than a 1T PS4 on sale.
You would be surprised how less you have to spend.
